Orthopedic Rehabilitation Program

Patient Diagnosis

The Laurels works closely with orthopedic surgeons to facilitate an early transfer of patients to our Orthopedic Rehabilitation Program.  Orthopedic diagnoses treated within the program include major joint procedures, hip fractures and multiple trauma. For non-surgical patients with coverage other than Medicare, direct admission to a Laurels’ Medically Complex Program may be appropriate.

Program Design

Orthopedic patients can benefit from additional inpatient days following surgery to allow general recovery and orthopedic stabilization. Our interdisciplinary team designs an effective planning, treatment and monitoring approach. This approach focuses on achieving the range of motion, ambulation and endurance goals needed to facilitate discharge to an outpatient setting. The Laurels’ experienced nursing staff provides the necessary post-operative services that may include:

  • Incision care and wound management

  • Maintaining appropriate alignment and flexion

  • Availability of overhead trapeze

  • Traction

  • Continuous passive motion

  • Antibiotic therapy

  • Anticoagulation therapy

  • Pain management

The Laurels uses in-house therapy staff within its rehabilitation programs. The Rehabilitation Services Director serves as The Laurels’ case manager for each Orthopedic Rehabilitation case.

Program Protocol

The Laurels’ Orthopedic Rehabilitation Program is appropriate for adult patients who have:

  • An established diagnosis

  • Completed any invasive procedures

  • Stabilized in their medical condition (e.g. stable cardiac status, no excessive bleeding) or

  • A prognosis of recovery and discharge to a lower level of care

Attending primary care physicians and/or surgeons are welcome to follow their patients participating in our Medically Complex Programs. If that is not feasible, a member of The Laurels’ medical staff will attend to the patient.
